The pictures tell the story...
The photograph on the right was taken of me in approximately 1956, at age 5 or 6. In the foreground is one of my “sculptures” that I had just made. Beneath it is a photo of me in the process of “building” another sculpture. No, I did not call them “sculptures” or “art” back then.
I had no idea what to call them, nor what they were all about. And while I had only a meager understanding of my intentions and what it was that drove me to do this, I could feel a fiercely intense need to make things in a very explicit way.
It was as if at a very young age, whatever was happening deep inside of me, strove to get out in the best way, and perhaps the only way, it could; in the making of “things”.
I also knew that my frustrations were palpable. I lacked the basic skills and abilities needed to manipulate whatever materials I had at the time.
The photo underneath the other two is also of me, 66 years later, making or building something. These days some people call it “art”.
Not much has changed in these 66 years. I am now capable of doing pretty much whatever I set my mind to do. And over my lifetime, I have had a lot of labels placed on me, such as “college educated”, or “artist”, “accomplished”,” teacher”, or “sculptor”.
These labels do provide me with some things to discuss, and perhaps ways to discuss it.
Yet the riddle that was inherent in my childhood pursuits, and which was captured in 2 photos so many years ago, has not dissipated a bit. If anything, the mystery in this lifetime of activity thrives, and it is more alive now than ever.
I invite you to explore my site, and discover all that can be discovered. Feel free to ask me about anything that arouses your interest or that you have questions about.
