THE MAGAZINE, Santa Fe
This is the first in a series of articles in which THE Magazine asks artists NOT to talk about their art, but instead to show us and tell us about objects, places, or aspects of their lives that are meaningful to them.
This month, sculptor Ed Haddaway, talks about old tools hanging on his studio wall...
"When I look at the tools on my studio wall and I see the play of the shadows and light on the tools, I immediately think about what they shoved down my throat in college: positive and negative space.
“But, on a more practical level, these tools make me think about my father who was really big on fishing and hunting, I was neither one when I was a kid. I was always out in the backyard building something. My father knew that I loved to build things and he wanted to support me. He wasn't very good at putting things together himself but he tried.
“Together we built a kayak and speedboat. He had some handsaws and some other old tools that he later gave me. There was something magical about my father giving these tools to me because he was trying to connect with me. These tools are a real connection to my father. And it's those kinds of things that keep me going……connections to the past. It's a heart thing."
